Sound Problems
The origin, and solution, to your sound problem is quite simple.
It appears that some computers' Quicktime presets conflict with the Franklin CD-ROMS.
Please follow the simple instructions to re-instate the proper sound.
- Choose the START menu.
- Once in the START menu, choose SETTINGS.
- Once in the SETTINGS, choose CONTROL PANELS.
- Once in the CONTROL PANEL, choose the QUICK TIME (one with the blue Q). If you do not see it, select the button on the left that allows you to see more control panel options
- Once in the QUICK TIME Settings, cycle through the options until you select SOUND OUT.
- Under the CHOOSE A DEVICE FOR PLAYBACK, select the WAVE OUT option. If there is more than one option, choose the one that corresponds to your sound card (most likely Sound Blaster)
- Now close all the windows and start up the game
Removing Names
To remove a name from the list you'll have to do the following:
For PC computers
- Go to your desktop and double click on "My Computer"
- Select your system/hard drive (usually C:)
- Click the search button (found on the top menu bar)
- If you have the Franklin The Turtle Goes to School CD ROM search for a file called schoolhouse.ini - if you have the Franklin's Clubhouse CD ROM search for the file clubhouse.ini
- Right mouse click on the found file and select "Open with..." then scroll through the list and select Notepad
- Find the child's name that you want to delete and select that entire line of information
- Delete the selected line and save the file
- Launch the CD ROM and the name(s) should now be removed from the list
For MAC computers
- Under the Apple symbol menu, choose Accessories --> Sherlock or Sherlock2
- Click the Hard Drive icon (top-leftmost image) to search the hard drive
- If you have the Franklin The Turtle Goes to School CD ROM search for a file called schoolhouse.ini - if you have the Franklin's Clubhouse CD ROM search for the file clubhouse.ini
- If you have the Franklin The Turtle Goes To School CD ROM type in "schoolhouse.ini" - if you have the Franklin's Clubhouse CD ROM type in clubhouse.ini and start the search (click on magnifying glass)
- The file should come up. It should be found under computer--> system folder --> preferences --> schoolhouse.ini
- Double clicking the filename should open Simple Text (There may be an Alias as well, don't click that one)
- Delete the lines "user1=[.......]" of the users you want to remove
- Save the file
Problems Starting the Game
You could try to launch the game manually, rather than using the autorun button. You can use the windows search utility to look for the file "Franklin The Turtle Club.exe" and double click on it. See if that starts the game. If it does, then you can create a shortcut on the desktop that will launch the game from that file instead
Accessing Progress Reports
The Progress report page itself is not set up to be printable. There is an achievements page that is printable though. In the backpack (upper right corner of most screens), there is a big ribbon in the middle to click on. This takes you to an achievements page which shows which levels of each activity you have completed. If you are determined to print the progress report, there is a way. I only know how to do this on Windows machines.
- Load up the game and go to the progress report page.
- When you have the page you want to print, press the ALT key and PRINT SCRN buttons at the same time. (This will make a copy of the screen image on the windows clipboard.)
- Exit the Franklin game.
- Open up an image editing program like Photoshop or one of the built-in Windows image editors (Paint or Imaging). Under the Start Menu->Accessories->Paint
- Open a blank image in the program.
- Under the Edit menu, select PASTE. This should copy the screen capture of the progress report to the new image.
- Print the image.
There are 3 different pages in the progress report (although only 2 of them keep track of progress, 1 is for creative activities), so you will have to do the above procedure for each page.
Won't Install
Please check to make sure you have enough space on her hard drive. If there's not enough space, the installer will not be able to put the files on the drive which could explain the error message. The install would fail and nothing would be put on the hard drive. From the desktop, double-click on the "My Computer" icon then right-click on the hard drive icon. Choose properties from the popup menu. There has to be at least 50Mb of free space.
Windows XP / Patches
The product was not developed to support Windows XP, so no guarantees can be made about its compatibility. If it does not work on XP, there's really nothing that can be done. There are no patches available for download.
Many problems with Windows XP compatibility can be solved using compatibility mode. This feature actually works surprisingly well on older Windows 95/98 games. To activate it, right mouse click on the executable, then choose "Properties". Choose the "Compatibility" tab on the dialog box, and check the box for Windows 95 or 98 compatibility. If the game requires 640x480 resolution or needs 256 colors you can also specify this here. The other options are not as important, but I usually check them too. You can sometimes make a balky installer succeed through the same trick. Select the startup program on the CD (typically "setup.exe"), right mouse click, and set the compatibility mode.
Uninstall/Reinstall
As with any program sometimes file get accidentally deleted or misplaced causing the program/CD Rom to have problems running. One way to fix this is to uninstall the program and then reinstall it.
To Uninstall the Franklin CD Rom game go to you Start Menu
- Start Menu - Settings - Control Panel - Add Remove Programs
- Find the Franklin CD Rom in the program list
- Select "Remove"
- Once the program has been uninstalled you can put the CD Rom back in your drive and boot up the CD. It will automatically run the install program again.
